Ken Agyapong picks nomination form to contest NPP flagbearer race

The former Member of Parliament for Assin Central in the Central Region, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, has officially picked nomination forms to contest in the 2026 New Patriotic Party (NPP) Flagbearer race.

The form was picked on his behalf by the MP for Obuasi West, Kwaku Kwarteng who was joined by Charles Forson of Tema West, Stephen Amoah of Nhyiaeso, and Lawrence Agyinsam of Hemang Lower Denkyira.

They were accompanied by Dr. Alex Ampaabeng, a former Deputy Finance Minister under the Akufo-Addo administration, who has openly declared his support for Agyapong. Dr. Ampaabeng described him as the best candidate to lead both the NPP and the nation into a prosperous future.

They picked the forms Tuesday, August 5, 2025, at the party’s Headquarters in Accra.

The largest opposition NPP officially opened nominations for its highly anticipated presidential primary.

With the opening of nominations, the stage is set for what is expected to be a competitive race to select the party’s presidential candidate for the 2028 election.

Aspiring flagbearers could face some financial hurdles, with nomination forms pegged at GH₵100,000.00 and the final filing fee set at GH₵500,000.00.

The announcement was made by the NPP General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, at a press briefing in Accra on July 29, 2025, signaling the formal commencement of the internal contest.

The NPP presidential primary will be held on Saturday, January 31, 2026.

The venue is yet to be decided by the National Executive Council of the party.

The nomination period commenced on July 29, 2025, and will close exactly one month later, on Thursday, August 28, 2025.

The combined cost of GH₵600,000 for nomination and filing represents a substantial investment for any aspirant.

This is the second time the former MP, Ken Agyapong, is contesting for the position to lead the party.

Mr. Agyapong came second with 37.41% in the keenly contested presidential primary in the last contest, while the main contender who was then the Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, had 61.43%.

Next year’s contest is expected to be among Ken Agyapong, Dr. Bawumia, a former General Secretary of the NPP, Kwabena Agyapong, a former Education Minister and the current MP for Bosomtwe Constituency, Dr. Yaw Over Adutwum, former MP for Mampong, Francis Addai Nimo, the current MP for Abetifi who was also the Agric Minister, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, among others.
